…a message from the president
In early October, I represented GCA at the NGC Fall Board Meeting in Saint Louis, Missouri. At that that time Wyoming was recognized as the state that had the greatest percentage increase in membership. The membership drive is continuing from June 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010. The prize is a daylily which is being cultivated, solely, to be named for the winning state. The winner will be announced at the 2010 NGC Convention in Atlanta.
In Alabama we are continuing to rapidly increase our membership by forming new clubs. A third new club is being organized county wide in Monroe County; also a club that once was federated is now reorganizing for the benefit of networking with GCA, DSR and NGC. Isn’t that exciting?
How exciting the District Meetings were! We heard from many of you concerning your projects and your support for our State and National projects. We also learned of one garden club member from Alabama being selected to decorate floats for the Rose Parade and of another person who was selected to help decorate The White House for Christmas. Programs on butterflies, native plants, prayer gardens, container gardens, herb gardens and others made us very proud of the work you continue to do to beautify our cities. You, individually, and the hosting clubs, made us feel very welcome and we left each meeting with our cheer of ... "Say, It's Great, To Be, a Member of The Garden Club of Alabama."
“Invite Them In and Watch Us Grow, Color Our World Green with the Seeds We Sow” is the theme of the 2010 GCA Convention Which will be held in Tuscaloosa. We will have our DSR Director Mary Sue Colvin and Alternate Director Margo Racca, as our guests. More details about the Convention are included in the winter issue of Hortensia and on the GCA web site. Make plans to attend and receive free plants to add to your garden.
I hope to see many of you in Montgomery at “Every Light A Prayer For Peace”, December 4, 2009; the Tea will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Archives and History Building. The Tree Lighting Ceremony is at 5:15p.m., on the Capitol Steps. Special music will be provided by Patricia Childs Janasky and an inspirational message will be presented by John Ed Mathison.
Thank you for your support and your many kindnesses to me. I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
