Burbank-Valley-Garden Club supports a youth garden club at Walt Disney Elementary School, the smallest elementary school in the Burbank Unified School District. The young gardeners are 190 of the 450 children in grades K through fifth grade and are called the Disney Diggers. Barbara Smith, a teacher at the school and a member of our club, is the coordinator for this on-going daily program in gardening, nature and the growth cycle from seeds or bulbs to mature plants. Barbara has been given her lunchtime to have groups of students come to the garden for various activities. The children have just planted a variety of bulbs that will bloom in the spring. They have separated strawberries runners and planted them to multiply their yield. They made a wreath from the Cotton Tree and presented it at the Campo de Cahuenga Re-enactment. Barbara Smith will be retiring after many years of dedication to the children and a lifelong commitment to gardening. A new teacher will be chosen for the gardening lessons. In the meantime Barbara has encouraged volunteers to come at lunchtime to help in the school’s garden. The new teacher will need all the help she can get. Attached see qualifications and instructions to apply. If you do have the time to volunteer, you can call the school and ask Barbara for a scheduled visit. For one-time visits, you do not have to submit an application. If you choose to work with the children, you will need to have a TB test and submit an application.
