PENNY PINES POSTER
CONTEST RULES
The Penny Pines Program is an important reforesting effort and we need your help to spread the word throughout the Central Atlantic Region. We all recognize Smokey the Bear and his slogan “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires” and Woodsy Owl and his “Lend a Hand – Care for the Land” slogan.
Who is Penny Pines? What should she look like and what should her slogan be? Posters should feature the artist’s original idea of both of these things so that, one day soon, Penny Pines will be as well known and effective as Smokey and Woodsy.
A good poster is bold and simple in design so its message is easily understood. Posters are to be the work of individual student artists using materials like crayons, markers, colored pencils, poster paints, watercolors, etc. Bright colors usually work best to get everyone’s attention. Three-dimensional, computer scanned, or electronically generated posters will NOT be accepted.
Posters should measure 11 inches by 17 inches and will be judged 20% each for originality, design, slogan, artwork and overall effectiveness. The artist’s name, address, grade and school should be carefully printed on the back of the poster along with the name of the sponsoring person or Garden Club.
The Penny Pines Poster Contest is open to students in all seven C.A.R. States in two categories - 1st through 3rd graders and 4th through 6th graders. In each category, we will award prizes of $25.00 for First Place, $15.00 for Second Place, $10.00 for Third Place plus Honorable Mention Ribbons in each category.
Winners will be announced at C.A.R. 2008. Our hope is that other Regions in National Garden Clubs, Inc. will follow our lead and sponsor this same contest throughout their States. If that happens, our C.A.R. winners could then go on to compete for National recognition of their efforts to promote this very important reforestation/conservation program.
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

2008 Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl
Garden Club Poster Contest
Local Garden Clubs, Teachers, Collaborators,
and U.S. Forest Service Employees!
Here is what YOU and YOUR students can do to help the environment:
We’re inviting 1st through 5th grade students to demonstrate through original drawings of Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl their understanding of fire prevention and basic environmental conservation principles
Smokey Bear is recognized nationally and internationally as the symbol for fire prevention. You’ve seen him dressed in a ranger’s hat and blue jeans and carrying a shovel. The original Smokey Bear appeared in 1944. Smokey’s message,
“Remember, Only You can prevent wildfires,” is one that children have heard for many years. It encourages personal responsibility for fire prevention. Smokey Bear teaches children and adults to be careful with campfires, barbecues, trash fires, and matches.
Woodsy Owl is America’s icon for the conservation of the environment. Since 1971, Woodsy has been helping parents and teachers inspire children to observe, explore, and care for the environment. He challenges children to “Lend a Hand - Care for the Land!” Woodsy Owl encourages children to join him by taking an active role in caring for the land through recycling, reusing, and reducing waste; planting and caring for trees; using resources wisely (such as not wasting water or electricity); not littering; and generally caring for the planet we live on.
The Grand Prize National Poster Contest Winner will win a free round trip airfare and accommodations for four to Washington, DC. A $100 U.S. Savings Bond will also be awarded to the First Place National Winners from each grade level sponsored by the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
