NEW, IMPROVED TREE CULTIVARS

A constant challenge is to grow better trees, those that can thrive despite soil compaction, air pollution, insect attack and intense heat. Many exciting new cultivars are available to the consumer, who seldom realizes that the process of developing and testing of new cultivars may take 10 to 15 years before a new tree is released to the trade.

The following trees would make a great addition to your gardens or communities:

Acer ginnala 'JFS-UGA', Red November Maple: This new Amur maple, selected by Dr. Michael Dirr, features bright green foliage that stays fresh and clean despite summer stress. Bright red fall color makes this heat-adapted maple a great performer. 18' high, with a 24' spread.

Amelanchier laevis, ‘Spring Flurry’ Service-berry: This new introduction has exceptional tree form. A dominant central leader supports strongly upward-oriented scaffold branches. Pure white blooms smother a delicate latticework of twigs in spring. These give way to healthy green foliage that turns a beautiful shade of orange in the fall. 35' high, 20' spread.Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Cornus controversa 'June Snow'. June Snow Dogwood grows to 30' high and spreading to 40'. It is horizontally layered with dark green foliage. An outstanding fall color ranges from mottled orange-yellow, red to purple-red. White flowers in flat-topped clusters often exceed 6" in diameter.

Gingko biloba 'The President'. Presidential Gold Gingko is a wonderful tree in the landscape. This seedless cultivar may well set the new standard among Gingkos. Selected by Dr. Michael Dirr, it has a strong central leader and full branching when young, developing a dense, upright crown when mature.
