CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION

CIVIC BEAUTIFICATION 2008

The Civic Beautification Committee, chaired by Jo Costello, is having a very busy and productive year.  In April, the committee, in conjunction with the Anne Hutchinson task force, cleared and planted the Hillside on Grandview Avenue in preparation for the re-dedication of the Anne Hutchinson stone and the move to its current and original location on the hillside.  More on the dedication ceremony is available on this website under “News”.  In May, our largest area on the corner of Newport and Beale was planted, mulched, weeded and carefully tended to make the location one of the nicest corners in Quincy as part of Cleaner Greener Quincy day.

Not everyone is aware, but we have several other sites that the committee maintains—the Fire Station in Houghs Neck, the planters in front of the Wollaston Branch of the Thomas Crane Public Library on Beale Street, and the planters at the front of the Adams Academy/Quincy Historical Society on Adams Street in Quincy.  And last but not least, two of our members, Rebecca Dinsmore and Barbara Lok maintain the lovely gardens at the Dorothy Quincy House on Butler Road.

We took some photos of the Hillside and corner of Newport and Beale shortly after they were planted in the spring, and recently updated those shots to show the progress in just a few months.  Our field of Mary Todd day lilies stands out on the corner.  We have also provided current photos of the Fire Station, Library and Historical Society, and encourage everyone to stop by these locations to admire the beautiful work.  Photos of the Dorothy Quincy House will be added later.

We are still looking for volunteers to take a week during the remainder of summer and fall to maintain the Hillside and Newport and Beale corner.  This basically takes only an hour two or three times during the week, to make sure trash is picked up, deadhead certain of the plants, light weeding and anything else you notice to make the areas continue to be a source of beauty for passersby.  If you can donate some time (and it’s always good to work in pairs) and haven’t already done so, please contact Jo Costello as soon as possible.

Wollaston Garden Club—Civic Beautification Contributions 2007

May 5, 2007 was designated “Cleaner, Greener Quincy” day, and in keeping with the theme, the Civic Beautification committee of the WGC , led by Jo Costello, set out to clean up and prepare the corners of Beale and Newport and Beale and Grandview for summer.  The day was one of the few steamy mornings in spring, and the workers expended a lot of effort to get things looking neat and tidy.  The following photos are just some examples of everyone pitching in to make a contribution.  Great job!!!.  Here it is, August already, and everything is in bloom and still looking great.

Our Civic Beautification Site at the corner of Newport Avenue and Beale Street in Wollaston was planted on June 30, 2001 with the cooperation of Tom Koch, Director of the Park and Forestry Department.  In the Spring of 2002 we continued across the street at the bottom of Grand View Avenue.  It was completed in the Fall of 2004.  We continue the maintenance at both sites.
