FEDERATED GARDEN CLUBS OF NEW YORK STATE
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The FGCNYS offers several scholarships to deserving college students. These scholarships are offered at the national, regional and state levels and all applications are sent to the state chairman, Jean Stapleton 725 Johnson Ave. Herkimer, NY 13350 Phone: 315-866-1642. NEW YORK STATE SCHOLARSHIPS
1. College Scholarships
Purpose of the FGCNYS Scholarship program is to offer financial aid to students and to promote the study of Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Botany, Plant Pathology, Forestry, Conservation, Agronomy, Environmental Studies, City Planning, Land Management and other allied majors.
Scholarship Guidelines
- Annual grant in the amount of $1000 is available with preference to a student finishing his/her first year at a two year college.
- Legal residents of NYS will be given preference.
- The scholarship grant is for the full school year and is directed to the Financial Aid Officer. Grants once submitted to a college cannot be transferred to another institution. Students continuing their education may delay naming school until after application deadline. Should the student change his/her major from those listed above, or withdraw from school, the balance of the grant funds must be returned to: Federated Garden Clubs of NYS, Inc 104f Covent Gardens, Guilderland, NY 12084. The student and the FAO determine how the money is to be spent: tuition, food, housing, books, etc.
- Judging is based on academic record, financial need, commitment to career and variety of avocation.
- The decision of the committee is made early in May. The students are informed by FGCNYS, Inc. immediately following the judging if he/she is not a winner.
- Students may reapply for a scholarship the next year if they are not a winner.
2. Federation School Scholarships
Scholarships are available to Federated garden club members for any FGCNYS school, Flower Show School, Landscape Design Study School, Symposium, Gardening Study School, Environmental Studies School, or Horticulture School. Recipients must be residents of NY State. Details are available from the Scholarship Chairman, or from any District Director.
3. Special Grants
Grants are also given to Cornell or other NY colleges, and NY Botanical Gardens and similar institutions, subject to the approval of the FGCNYS Board of Directors.
CAR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
One (1) $1,500.00 Scholarship may be awarded each year and presented at the Fall Conference.
Application must be sent to the state chairman Jean Stapleton by June 1, 2010 to allow for processing at the state level. All applications must go through her.
Each State may submit one (1) application. The application is sent to the C.A.R. Scholarship Awards Representative by the July 1 deadline. Applications are judged by three (3) former C.A.R. Directors chosen by the current Director and the current C.A.R. Scholarship Representative.
Application Requirements:
- The NGC Advanced Scholarship Form is to be used, Follow all directions and include the following:
a. Application form.
b. Complete official academic transcript.
c. Personal letter from applicant, discussing goals, background,
financial need and commitment to chosen field of study. (Limited
to two typed pages, only).
d. List of extracurricular activities, honors, recognitions received.
e. Financial aid form.
f. Three letters of recommendation, focusing on the following, and
limited to one typed page
1) Scholastic abilities
2) Character
3) Work related experience - A student who has won a N.G.C. Scholarship is not eligible for a CAR Scholarship.

National Garden Clubs Scholarships
New York State is entitled to send one applicant for this $3500 scholarship. All applications must be sent to the state chairman Jean Stapleton by March 1, 2010. All information, criteria and application forms can be downloaded from the national web site at http://gardenclub.org. Note that PhD candidates are no longer eligible.
