Floral Design Committee Every member of the Navarre Garden Club, Inc. is invited and encouraged to attend the Floral Design Committee. (Picture: Design created by Jolene Depew at the 2008 Annual Navarre Garden Club Flower Show. Blue Ribbon Winner entitled: Bird Sanctuary.) The purposes of the Floral Design Committee are: | |
- To further the understanding of National Garden Clubs’ (NGC) and Florida Federation of Garden Clubs’ (FFGC) guidelines for creating floral designs for flower shows by holding monthly workshops to teach basic and advanced floral design techniques,
- To cultivate interest in floral design throughout the Navarre Garden Club, Inc. by providing Fun with Flowers workshops for designers who want a fun, easy approach to flower arranging,
- To cultivate interest in joining the Navarre Garden Club, Inc. and in floral design throughout the community by placing two floral designs each month at the Navarre Library,
| To offer assisted living residents of two local nursing homes—Bay Breeze Nursing and Retirement Center and The Gulf Breeze Courtyard—the joy of making floral designs through monthly workshops,
To promote floral design in the Navarre Garden Club, Inc. by offering a Floral Design Corner at each monthly meeting,
To plan and execute the annual Flower Show held at the Navarre Library, created to educate the community in horticulture and floral design and
To plan and execute the annual Thanksgiving Centerpiece Workshop as an outreach to Club members and residents of the community, Gulf Breeze Hospital, and Bay Breeze Nursing Home. We plan to hold our workshops the first Monday of every month (exception: October 13) at the Holley-Navarre Elks Lodge from 1:00-4:00 p.m. If we have less than 10 members to register, the workshops will be held at Linda Henderson’s home. For more information or to join the Floral Design Committee, email floraldesign@navarregardenclub.org. The Floral Design Committee is doing things a little differently in 2008-2009. We are offering two monthly back-to-back workshops—a workshop for the serious designer who wants to enter competitive flower shows and a workshop for the less serious designer who only wants to learn how to make a fun, easy floral arrangement to take home and enjoy. We are bringing in two top state designers—Gina Jogan and Judy Keliher—to help educate us in the art of floral design. Gina will teach us a workshop on designs and contrived containers and Judy is teaching a workshop on “Petites”. We plan to add a section to our flower show on “Petites” which will change it from a Small-Standard Flower Show to a Standard Flower Show. This upgrade will allow the Navarre Garden Club, Inc. to compete for Top Exhibitor Awards in horticulture and design and for the Club to compete for the NGC Standard Flower Show Achievement Award. Those participating in the Floral Design Workshop are to bring a finished design and have it placed ready for the “Critique” by 1:00 p.m. Since all expenses are incurred by the designer, there is no charge for this workshop. Every member is encouraged to audit this free workshop. Four designs will be selected for exhibit at the Club meeting the following day. Members attending the meeting will vote on their favorite by placing a “chip” in a cup in front of their favorite design. The two designs getting the most chips will be taken by the designers to the Library to be on display advertising our Club. The designer is responsible for keeping the design watered and looking fresh and for removing it when it is not. The cost for the Fun with Flowers Workshop is $5.00 which will partially cover the expenses for a hands-on, take-home design. Ground Rules: Floral Design Workshop All members are to bring to the meeting a finished design they made at home. All expenses will be assumed by the individual designer. All designs will be critiqued at the beginning of each meeting using a common list of questions regarding the Elements and Principles of Design as the point of comparison. Each designer will lead the critique of their own design. We will all learn from each other.
Designers are expected to pay for their finished designs. The Club will make available supplies at monthly Club meetings for the design workshops. It is the responsibility of the individual designer to keep their supplies current.
All designs will comply with NGC/FFGC rules for designs, follow the agreed upon monthly theme and follow any prescribed instructions—the same as for any flower show being judged by NGC accredited judges.
Designs will be staged on a table 30" from the floor, draped in black. 36" show boards will be provided by the Navarre Garden Club, Inc.
Two designs will be chosen at each Club meeting for display at Navarre Library. The owner of the design has the responsibility to water and refresh the design to keep it looking good. These designs will be titled and noted as supplied by the Navarre Garden Club, Inc. and will be used to advertise the existence of the Navarre Garden Club, Inc.
Fun with Flowers Workshop Students must register five days prior to the workshop date in order for supplies, flowers and plant material to be available.
Students are considered “registered” when their check ($5.00 made out to the Navarre Garden Club) is in the hands of the Treasurer, Lynn Wilson. (Mail to: P.O. Box 5606, Navarre, FL 32566.
