Sam Smith, Chairman

“Let me entertain you, Let me make you smile”, was the hit song that made Gypsy Rose Lee’s career successful!  I am no Gypsy Rose Lee, but my career in Civic Development for the next two years is to make your club a success.

As the Army recruitment motto states that they need a few good men, I would like a few good clubs to step up and become role models for clubs across the state accepting the challenge to accept the mission below and become the best you can become “all that you can be”.

Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. Civic Development Mission Statement:

Become a progressive state second to none, committed to providing the best and most beautiful place to live, work, worship, and grow.  At all times serve the best interest of all citizens through the 6-4-2 planning process.

The Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. Civic Development Program has as its goal for each club to become excited, cooperate with other clubs, agencies, and organizations to make our state one of the best in the nation.

Select public areas in your community which are in serious need, develop green spaces to benefit everyone, and improve both the appearance and the environment.  Some of these include traffic islands, open areas near major highways, parks for children and adults, walking gardens, prayer gardens, historical monuments, etc.

So that your club may more successfully carry our civic development projects, The Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. is recommending that you develop a 6-4-2Plan.  This plan developed by you, the club, and is used to guide your civic development during each span of years.

The book of Proverbs tells us, without knowledge and vision the people perish, We certainly do want each club to thrive and be a changing force in communities across the state,  The 6-4-2 Plan will assist you.  Within that plan you will have a needs, a planning, and a finance committee that implements the vision of the club.

The Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. will recognize and award clubs that develop the 6-4-2 Plan and encourages individual clubs to secure their 501©3 status under the umbrella of the Garden Club of South Carolina in order to assist in the financing of the civic development projects.  In addition there are grants to fund the projects.  A beneficial list will be posted later.

To restate, Ms. Rose Lee’s song, you will be entertained with your accomplishments and smiles will follow your success.

Remember I will be glad to meet with your club and get the process started.  Please feel free to contact me at:

Looking forward to working with you.
