Blue Star Memorial Program

National Garden Clubs, Inc.’s Blue Star Memorial

Program honors service men and women.  This

program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood Photobucket

trees by the New Jersey Council of garden    Clubs in

1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II.

In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs

adopted the program and began a Blue Star Highway

System, which covers thousands of miles across the

Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.  A

large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was

placed at appropriate locations along the way.

The program was expanded to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the armed services of the United States.  Memorial Markers and By-Way markers were added to the Highway Markers, to be used at locations such as National cemeteries, parks, veteran’s facilities and gardens.  The Blue Star became an icon in World War II, and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war, as well as in churches and businesses.

This program has been active all through the years to the present, a fitting tribute always and especially now.  South Carolina has been very dedicated, but there is room for growth.  A form for the By-Way Marker and one for the Highway and/or Memorial Marker can be found on this GCSC Web Site or you may obtain them by contacting your State  Chairman, Betty H. Gourdin (see below).  Please DO NOT mail your forms directly to SEWAH, but instead send four (4) copies to your current State Chairman; we have to keep accurate records on the number of markers in our state.

SEWAH has requested the forms be typed if possible or printed legibly. Also, please do not print the check on the back of the order form. The orders go thru many hands before they are shipped and it is best not to have the information on there.  Allow eight weeks for delivery after order is received.

Effective June 1, 2008 thru May 2010, the prices are:

·         Blue Star Highway/Memorial Markers $1200

·         Blue Star By-Way Markers $395

For more information contact, Betty Gourdin, GCSC Blue Star Chairman,

153 Walnut Way, Pineville, SC  29468  (843) 351-4335; bhgourdin@tds.net
