Babs Barnette Environmental Scholarship

Information Sheet

 Criteria for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

 

Purpose:  The Hessie T. Morrah Horticulture Scholarship offers financial aid to students and

 encourages the study of Agriculture, Agronomy, Botany, City Planning, Floriculture, Forestry,

 Horticulture, Land Management, Landscape Architecture/ Design, Plant Pathology, or

 related majors.  Eligibility: All technical/junior/4-year undergraduates [may apply as HS senior]
 and graduate
 students.  The Babs Barnette Environmental Scholarship offers financial aid to
 students and 
 encourages the study of Environmental Control issues and allied courses. 
 
Eligibility: Rising- 
 junior or senior undergraduates [may apply as college sophomore] and 
 graduate students.

    

Deadlines:  The postmark deadline is February 2, 2010.  Mail application by certified mail,

  return receipt requested or email akpayne@bellsouth.net  for written confermation of reciept.

 

Applications:  All applicants must enroll in nine or more credit hours per semester or

 the per quarter/trimester equivalent. 

              Scholarships applied for in the 2009 - 2010  school year will be $2,000 grants for the   

              Hessie T. Morrah scholarships and $500 for the Babs Barnette scholarship.

              Applications materials should be stapled or paper-clipped together and in a folder.     

              Incomplete applications will not be judged.

               

ALL of the following components MUST be included to be judged:

          1.    Application

2.    Transcript of current academic record from last school attended mailed from school

registrar/guidance to GCSC Scholarship Co-Chairmen, including latest marking period

    (3.0 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale is required for consideration)

3.       Narrative written by applicant discussing goals, commitment to chosen academic field

      of study, financial concerns, background, activities, and honors.  Max. length: 2 pages

4.       Three letters of recommendation, limiting each to one page in length

                        a.   President of the sponsoring federated Garden Club or Council

b.   School official such as advisor, department head, or principal 

c.   Individual (not a relative) to endorse character of applicant.

5.       Wallet-size photo of applicant

 

   Student must be enrolled in an accredited technical college, college, or university.  Grants are

mailed directly to the Financial Aid Office and are divided evenly by semester, trimester, or

quarter depending on the academic institution.  If student changes to a non-approved major

or withdraws from college, the remaining balance of the funds will be returned to the GCSC.

    All applicants must have a strong SC connection(SC residency, attending college in SC,

Garden Club of  SC link, etc.)   Children and grandchildren of members of federated Garden Clubs,
as well as high school 
Garden Club members, will be given special consideration.
Special circumstancesof applicants will
be reviewed in awarding scholarships.

    All applicants will be notified of the results by March 15, 2010.  Winners will be honored at the

April 2010 GCSC State Convention.  Attendance of scholarship winner(s) is encouraged, but

optional.  Scholarship applicants and winners, who maintain a "B" average may reapply

in subsequent years.
