April 6 "Creating Pots with Pizzazz"
Karen Grant will discuss all aspects for designing and creating containers. She will tell you
what soil to use, how to select the right plants and the correct way to fill your container, so
you can create your own photo worthy container. Always a fascinating subject and one you
will enjoy.

at the State Fairgrounds, Bldg. #30 8 a.m. ‘till Noon
May 4 "Good Plants are Hard to Find”
Mark McWilliams, RLA, ICH professional from Copper Tree Outdoor Lifestyles will discuss
tried and true plants to use in creating an easily sustainable landscape. These selected
plants are hardy for our area. Gain insight into how you can add texture in your landscape,
using plants that will add enjoyment to your gardening and are easy to care for.

June 1 “Invasive Plants”
Ben Dolbeare, Invasive Species Project manager with DNR will discuss invasive plants in
Illinois. Listing these plants and their invasive nature, he will explain the damage they
cause. More importantly, he will help you understand what you can do to stop the spread of
invasive plants and promote native plants that will do well in our gardens.

June 17 Bus Trip – Cantigny Park, Wheaton, IL.
Come visit this 1,000 acre estate of Chicago Tribune publisher, Colonel Robert McCormick.
There are more than 29 acres with 22 individual gardens to view and a tour of the McCormick
mansion.

July 6 "Walking Garden Tours"
-- In lieu of our usual meeting this morning you can explore area gardens. Stop by the
Church for your map between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. Plan on carpooling and taking many
photos. All tours end at 3 p.m.

September 14 "Autumn’s Bounty"
Susan Burgett, owner of Enchanted Florist will create flower arrangements for autumn
accenting the colorful foliage and flowers of the season.

September 14 Annual Flea Market
Garden related and quality hand crafted items will be offered for sale before and after the
meeting. Come early and enjoy this unique sale. Ten percent of the profits will go to SCGC.

October 5 "Putting Your Garden to Bed"
Betsy Patterson (former recipient of an SCGC Scholarship) with Green View Nursery will
discuss fall cleanup, tool storage, and other activities that you can do now to make your
gardening more enjoyable next spring. Fall is a busy gardening time. What you do now will
be reflected when spring arrives. Get more accomplished by using some time saving
techniques.

November 2 "Landscaping – Made in the Shade"
Dr. K. Irani, known to many of you from Illinois Gardener, will discuss planting in a shaded
garden. The basics of landscaping are made easier with his helpful formula. Learn about
the site characteristics unique to shady areas and discover which plants adapt to the low
light landscape.

Michelle O’Neal-Babicky from Petals & Co. in Rochester will provide tips for holiday
decorating with live materials. Learn new ideas everyone can use to make their home festive
and colorful for the winter holidays.

January 4 "Flowers Through the Artist’s Eye"
Mary Selinski will discuss an artist’s interpretation of flowers. Have you ever looked at a
painting and wondered how the artist saw aspects of plants that you had never noticed?
Mary will show you how the art we enjoy evolves from the plants in our lives.

March 1 “Fundamentals of Design”
Heard the phrase “fundamentals of design?” Let David Robson and Ada Lynn Shrewsbury
describe the six principles of: dominance, rhythm, contrast, proportion, balance and scale.
And…if you “break” some of the principles, learn how to get back on track. Get up close
and personal for a program designed to make you a better floral arranger and help you enjoy
the designs you see.

March 25 Annual SCGC Spring Luncheon/Meeting
April 5 "Miniature Landscapes"
Martha Smith, Horticulture Educator, U of IL Extension, Macomb will take gardening to a
new level. Gardening in extremely small spaces to create landscapes in miniature is easy,
compared to full-scale landscapes. Fairy gardens, Doll gardens or Childs garden, whatever
name you prefer, these are fun areas to create. You can use a simple container or set a
mini-landscape directly into your garden. Create a new area in any garden, regardless of
how much space you have.
