“ADOPT A LOCAL NURSING HOME”
Garden Therapy

Our President Yvonne Nilles’ project is “Adopt a Local Nursing Home”. She suggests we hold a meeting, a workshop or flower show in a facility near you. This is Garden Therapy….plan your club year accordingly.

On a another note, I recently visited the National Botanical Garden in Washington, DC and, in particular, the Butterfly Garden a project of the National Garden Clubs. We took our 12 year old grandson and he was the first to point out the only butterfly we saw in the garden, a yellow sulphur on a Blazing Star. The gardens were lovely, the conservatory filled with new and old plants, the orchid house, especially colorful. The garden is located at the foot of the U.S. Capitol at the beginning of the National Mall.

Walking on the Capitol grounds, you can’t help but notice the many different variety of trees; all named making a wonderful shade canopy. Washington became the City of Trees in the late 19th century. The Park Service oversees hundreds of thousands of trees on federally owned land. The City maintains 113,000 trees.

Another highlight for me was seeing the vegetable garden on the south lawn of the White House. There it was, looking lush! There were raised beds of rhubarb, kale, chard, shell peas, spinach, fennel, many lettuce varieties, broccoli, both perennial and annual herbs, carrots, onions and marigolds. I am sure the pollinators and butterflies are happy there.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECTS

Eleven clubs in Iowa participated in the Habitat for Humanity Landscaping Project in 2008 according to their presidents’ reports.

The Jefferson Garden Club had a speaker at their April meeting because HFH is new in Jefferson. They plan to provide help by planting shrubs this spring.

The Knoxville Federated Garden Club provided a noon meal for volunteer HFH workers and donated a tree to the new homeowners.

The Evening Star Federated Garden Club of Johnston purchased a tree ($25) and provided perennials, annuals, and shrubs for a HFH house. They participated in the Blitz Home and Perfectly Simple container plant donation for Garden Week by planting annuals provided in a beautiful ceramic container.

The Town & Country Garden Club of Decorah donated labor and plant material for landscaping two HFH homes in Ridgeway ($407).

The Swaledale Federated Garden Club provided money for housing projects. In September an ‘Autumn Blaze’ maple tree was planted at a HFH home in Mason City.

The Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club contributed to HFH projects from proceeds of their garden tour.

The Good Earth Garden Club of Cedar Rapids contributed money for landscaping a HFH home.

The Ackworth Garden Club planted 2 flower containers for HFH homeowners ($50) They also planted flowers and shrubs at a new HFH home ($90.46).

The Green Thumb Garden Club of Northwood laid mulch and planted at a HFH house in Worth County.

The Clay County Federated Garden Club purchased shrubs, landscaping and trees for a HFH house.

The Ames Garden Club assisted with landscaping materials and advice for two HFH homes in Ames. They donated 50 perennials (shade and sun) from their plant sale ($100).

They planted two ceramic containers with annuals for the open houses ($75). They assisted in selecting shrubs and gave advice on the care of the lawn, perennials and shrubs.

As you can see, there are many different ways in which clubs can participate in the NGC Habitat for Humanity Landscaping Project.
