2009 Mid-Central District Annual Report

Apryl Reinsch, Mid-Central District Director Report

I am very proud of our District.  We have 10 very active garden clubs, 1 plant society, and 1 design club with mixed members from our 11 clubs.

Mid-Central District had our Spring Meeting and Luncheon on April 16.  We had every club in our District represented.  We had one club participating that has been absent from our meetings the last five years.  There were 74 members total, 73 members and 1 person who did our program.  The meeting was held at East Central College in Union, MO.  This is our 8th year we have held our Spring Meeting there.  The location and the culinary school works great for us.  We have 3 southern clubs, so this location evens out the distance for all.

The program, “Extending the Iris Season”, was presented by Jean Morris, Secretary of the St. Louis Iris Society.  The slide program was 1 hour long and no one complained.  She included Irises that were re-bloomers which extends the season from February to November.  After the slides, Jean took a large amount of time answering all questions.  The program was very educational, plus interesting.  I had her sheets printed so every member could mark the Irises they wanted.

Our District has been very busy planning the 2010 State Convention.  Our Assistant Director, Kris Corey, is the Chairman for the convention.  Sharon Parsons, Toni Donnelly, and Pat Schnarr have been a big help for her.  Every club in our District will be involved and an important part of the convention.

Our District, thanks to Boone Country Garden Club, will be adding another Blue Star Memorial to the many we have.

We, also, have three clubs that have a Standard Flower Show every year, Boone Country, Cuba Hills, and Owensville.  We have Claudia Chopp (Accredited Master Judge and Flower Show School Instructor) Sharon Parsons (Accredited Master Judge), Carol Eilermann (Life-

Accredited Judge) Cecelia Lindemann and Apryl Reinsch (Accredited Judges) and 1 Student Judge, Robin Gosnell.

We have a large amount of members who are Gardening Consultants, Landscape Design Consults, and Environmental Studies students.

The District boasts on the large number of National Life members and State Life members for the size of our District.

Unlike National trends, our District had six clubs that added  new members  this year to their roosters.  B.C.G.C. won Garden Club of Year!!

We may not be one of the largest districts in Missouri, but we have ACTIVE, VERY ACTIVE, AND EXTRAORDINARILY ACTIVE CLUBS.

District Director Report
Spring 2008

My first official duty as District Director was to install the incoming officers of the District's newest club, Fleur de Lis Garden Society in November, 2007. We have 10 garden clubs and 1 garden society, totaling to 270 members.  Our district theme is “Passionate Planters Perpetuate our Planet”!

At our Spring District Meeting we celebrated Sullivan Garden Club for 75 years as a club, and 71 years federated. Our District presented the National Award of Merit Certificate for the 75 years of service to the very active and civic-minded club members who do so much for their community and role models for all of us. It takes understanding, patience, caring, and determination to keep a club going for 75 years. We, as a District, salute them.

Owensville Garden Club is our second oldest club, being federated for 58 years. This is a very active club. They belong to a group of Sister Clubs, Owensville, Sullivan, and Cuba Hills. I was fortunate to go to one of the Sister Club meetings as Asst. Director. When Owensville was having the meeting. They knew how to have fun! They participate in the County Fair by having a Flower Show every year, with members of the club and Fair participants.

First Capitol Garden Club is located in the St. Charles area of our District. This is their 46th federated year. This, too, is an active club with a variety of programs in their yearbook. They have a few members who have been members from the beginning of their club. They have 19 members, plus 3 honorary members. They will be hosting our Fall Meeting this year.
Boone Country, my club, has been federated for 35 years. This club won the Club of the Year Award in 2007. The club has 46 active members and 4 associate members. They have a niche for every member with a large variety of civic projects, field trips, horticulture, design, and our Annual Flower Show. One of our members, Claudia Chopp, sponsors a Standard
Flower Show Award and our past member, Phyllis Ann Shade Memorial Award for Youth Education is continued by her son.

Jardin du Lac started 36 years ago, being federated 35 years ago. They have a large variety of civic projects, one of which is the Blue Star Memorial they established in 2007. They now sponsor the PS Award which will be named the Jardin du Lac Garden Club Landscape Design Award for $25 to a deserving club at the state convention.

Troy Garden Club is our furthest northern club. They have, also, a variety of programs and their Annual Holiday House Tour. They have 23 members.

Cuba Hills Garden Club is also located south off Highway 44. They are in the Sister Clubs with Sullivan and Owensville. They have been federated for 18 years. They have an Annual Flower Show at the County Fair. A personal reference, I received my first Blue Ribbon in Design when Betty Jean Collier was chairman of the show.

Twin Chimney Garden Club, along with Boone Country, added the most members the last two years. They do a variety of activities, especially with the grade school close by. Their civic projects are expansive. This club is an evening club. They have been federated for 14 years. They have 23 members.

Lewis and Clark Garden Club is an evening club. The club has 24 members. They are unique in our District because as members they have many husband and wife teams. They meet at the Weldon Spring Interpretive Center on Highway 94.

Fleur de Lis Garden Society club is our newest club. They were federated in 2007. They, too, are very active for a small club. They have 10 members in their Society. They had 2 of their members who enrolled in the Flower Show School #1 in St. Louis.

Last, but not least, is Design Concepts Garden Club. This is a unique club whose members come from other district clubs. They specialize in flower designs, horticulture, and Flower Show preparation and procedure.

Mid-Central District's theme is "Grow Where You are Planted!" We consist of 10 garden clubs with a total of 261 members. We continue to add new members each month and hope to surpass our 2007 membership.

Our District Spring meeting was held Thursday, April 19th, at East Central College in Union, MO. We had representatives from all of our 10 clubs present, with 83 members in attendance. In lieu of a flower show, this year we had each club enter a Creative Centerpiece with the theme of "Bullfrogs and Butterflies" to help kick off the State Convention. 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded. Two flower show judges from East Central District attended and our speaker was Mary Ann Fink, Master Gardener, speaking on "Plants of Merit."

Nine of our ten clubs submitted yearbooks. Four of those were forwarded to the State Awards Chairman for State Competition.

Mid-Central District participated in the Annual Art- In- Bloom exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum. We were represented by three of our District members - Cecilia Lindemann and Sharon Parsons of Boone Country Garden Club and Carol Eilermann of Owensville Garden Club. They did a wonderful job representing our District.

All of our clubs have events coming up in the next few months, such as: Fashion Show/Luncheon, April 28th and Tea & Tour, September 22nd given by Jardin du Lac Garden Club of Lake Saint Louis, MO; Cuba Hills Garden Club in Cuba, MO is participating in the Crawford County Fair Flower Show July 12-July 14th; Boone Country Garden Club is having a flower show and plant sale May 12th at the Daniel Boone Home in Defiance, MO; First Capitol Garden Club won 1st place in the "Celebration of Trees" fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity in Winter 2006 and will participate again in 2007; Owensville Garden Club will chair the Gasconade County Fair Flower Show, July 25-28 in Owensville, MO; July 31st, Lewis & Clark Garden Club will have a speaker from Gateway Garden Railroad Club teach them how to design, build and exhibit a garden railroad; Sullivan Garden Club will celebrate 75 years as a club in 2008 and are the only garden club in our District to moderate a radio program that informs the community of new trends, ideas and tips on gardening; Troy Garden Club's programs focus on spring, summer and fall information; and, Twin Chimneys Garden Club maintain a Butterfly Garden and Outdoor Classroom at Twin Chimneys Elementary School.

We look forward to many more projects and activities as the year progresses.

We have enjoyed sowing, hoeing and growing with State President, Mary Ann Meador and wish her well in all future endeavors. We also look forward to working with our next State President, Maisie Keeser.
