Livable Landscapes Sunday, January 11 1:30 - 3:00 PM World landscapes are in rapid transition through space and time, purpose and palette, meaning and motivation. Using worldwide examples of designed spaces and emergent ecologies, Rick Darke outlines and illustrates strategies for creating private gardens and shared landscapes that celebrate both cultural and biological diversity. Book signing after the lecture. $20 Basic Gardening Series: The How-To's of Herb Gardening Sunday, January 18 1:30 - 2:30 PM Herbs add fragrance and flavor to our lives, and practical beauty to landscapes. This basic herb overview teaches you how to choose a site, plan and prepare it and care for it. The master gardeners recommend herbs for beginners to grow. $12.
Soil Preparation and Plant Selection Saturday, January 24 9:30 - 11:00 AM A design is only successful if the plants grow well after planting. Soil preparation is critical to the overall design. Discuss proper selection and location of plants and learn about varieties available for your garden. $15.

Grow flowers, vegetables, and herbs from seed and expand your garden. Mary Frogale, Green Spring’s propagator/horticulturist, discusses topics such as potting mixes, containers, seed treatments, lighting, fertilization, watering, seed sources, and timing. Be inspired with seed starting fever! Then take home a few Green Spring seeds of your own. $20. Past, Present and Future of the Smithsonian’s Ripley Garden Sunday, February 8 1:30-3pm. What is it like to garden in front of 35 million people from all over the globe? Janet Draper, horticulturalist, applies Smithsonian’s goal of “increase and diffusion of knowledge” to the Ripley garden with attention grabbing plants, innovative combinations and by defying the accepted notion of what a public garden is expected to be. $10. Low Impact Development Strategies for Home Gardeners Saturday, February 14 9:30-11am. Rain gardens, water barrels, appropriate plants selection, are all ways to make lower impacts on our planet. Brenda Skarphol, Green Spring horticulturalist discusses these concepts and provides practical information for you to implement in your garden. Instruction takes place inside and outdoors.
