79th Anniversary Awards Ceremony
April 23, 2009 President ~ Lynne Merrill Awards Co-chairmen Jean Marie Estabrook, Lois Hartley The Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. The awards program affords National Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. an opportunity to express their appreciation and support for all the club projects that were completed or were in progress during the past year. By honoring our clubs, we hope to promote growth and stimulate our members to plan their programs and activities for the coming year in accordance with the objectives of our organizations. This year’s Books of Evidence attest to the abilities and talents of our clubs. The Awards Committee congratulates the winners, thanks all who applied for an award this year, and encourages even more clubs to submit entries next year. 1. Elizabeth McCaffrey Arbor Day Award For their Arbor Day program at Goddard State Park, the Western Cranston Garden Club is awarded the silver tray and a check for $75.00. 2. Bird Award For their annual school programs, public club meeting program and maintenance of a bird feeder and bird bath at the historic Brownell House, the Sogkonate Garden Club wins the Bird Award. 3. Jo MacIntosh Memorial Bowl for Conservation Education. Meshanticut Garden Club receives the silver bowl for their Arbor Day program at the Cranston Child Development Center. 4. The Gorham Bowl for Conservation Excellence For their program year dedicated to conservation education and work, Edgewood Garden Club receives the silver bowl. 5. Portsmouth Garden Club Memorial Bowl for Litter Control . The Memorial Bowl for Litter Control is awarded to Sogkonate Garden Club for their outstanding litter control and Earth Day projects. *A Certificate of Recognition goes to Western Cranston Garden Club for their litter control project. 6. Kathryn M. Sheehan Trophy The civic beautification award is presented to Western Cranston Garden Club for their wonderful project. *A Certificate of Recognition goes to Portsmouth Garden Club for their civic beautification project. 7a. Flower Show Awards of Merit “Tea at the Chalet” presented by Sundial Garden Club, a Small-Standard Flower Show, was delightful and is awarded the Award of Merit. Tiverton Garden Club presented a Standard Flower Show, “The Gardener’s Jubilee”, a celebration of 75 years, and is presented an Award of Merit Certificate of Recognition. 7b. Certificates of Recognition The Rhode Island Dahlia Society is recognized for the high quality display of dahlias and designs in their 43rd Annual Dahlia Show. The Preservation Society of Newport County is recognized for their impressive Major Flower Show “Explore! Botanical Passions.” The Rhode Island Rose Society is recognized for their exquisite display of roses and designs in their show “Symphony of Roses.” 8a. Barbara Spring Lownes Memorial Bowl The award is presented to Tiverton Garden Club for their exceptional and unique Educational and Youth Exhibits in “The Gardener’s Jubilee.” 8b. Horticulture Award Sundial Garden Club receives this award for their beautiful and abundant display of horticulture in “Tea at the Chalet”. 9. Flower Show Schedule Award Tiverton Garden Club receives this award for their creative and extremely attractive schedule. 10a. Judges Council Award for Staging in a Standard Flower Show in a Public Building is presented to Tiverton Garden Club for their unique staging of their Standard Flower Show, “The Gardener’s Jubilee”. 10b. Jean T. Whitaker Award for Staging in a Standard Home Show or Standard Placement Show. Sundial Garden Club is the recipient of this award for their placement Small-Standard Flower Show “Tea at the Chalet” using the furniture and setting of the pleasant and picturesque location. 10c. Ruth F. Anderson Award Sundial Garden Club receives this award for exhibiting overall excellence in their Small-Standard Flower Show, “Tea at the Chalet”. 11. Maryellen Blount Award for Garden Therapy is presented to Apple Blossom Garden Club for their commitment to seniors. 12. RIFGC Ways & Means Award Edgewood Garden Club is the recipient of the Ways and Means Award for their active participation in and support of Federation sponsored activities. 13. Frances M. Potier Membership Award With 7 new members, the Membership Award goes to the Gardeners of Westerly. 14. Horticulture Program Award This award is given to Cumberland Garden Club for their Iris program. 17. Junior Achievement Award For their exemplary ongoing program and commitment to the youth in their community, Sogkonate Garden Club wins the Junior Achievement Award. 18. Junior Gardeners Award of Excellence The Barrington Garden Club receives the Junior Gardeners Award of Excellence for their outstanding, ongoing junior gardeners’ activities. 19. Mary N. Santopietro Youth Award This is awarded to the Cumberland Garden Club for their exceptional garden therapy program working with youth and seniors. 20. Edith Fricker Award Three clubs are the recipients of the Edith Fricker program award for their well-rounded programs: Class 2 – Hameho Garden Club Class 4 – Gentian Garden Club Class 6 – Barrington Garden Club * A Certificate of Recognition goes to Cumberland Garden Club for their year of programs. 21. Yearbook Awards The purpose of a garden club yearbook is to summarize the year’s plans and goals and present them in such a way that garden club members are inspired to attend meetings and participate in club activities. For their outstanding yearbooks, we honor the following garden clubs. In their respective categories, the winners are: Class 2 – Hameho Garden Club Class 3 – Bayberry Garden Club Class 4 – Bristol Garden Club Class 5 – Sogkonate Garden Club Class 6 – Barrington Garden Club 22. Carolyn B. Haffenreffer Silver Bowl The prestigious Haffenreffer Silver Bowl is awarded to Hameho Garden Club. 24a. The Sylvia Street Award For her creative, synergistic design in the Design Study Group class titled, “It’s a Beautiful Morning”, the Sylvia Street Award is presented to Vicki Iannuccillo. 24b. The Joan F. Pesola Award For her design in the Judges Council Show “A Centennial Celebration of Beauty at Blithewold”, the Joan Pesola Award is presented to Candace Morgenstern. 25. R.I. Federation Project of Merit Award. For their superb civic beautification project, Sogkonate Garden Club wins the RI Federation Project of Merit Award. 27. For their wonderful, worthwhile project that included many youth, Western Cranston Garden Club receives the National Garden Week Award. 28. The Newsletter Award Newsletters are a wonderful way for clubs to keep members updated on National, Regional, RIFGC and club activities. They are a forum to provide more details about future programs, introduce new members, share website links, thank club members for project work and highlight member specialties. Three clubs are recipients of the newsletter award: Class 2 – Hameho Garden Club Class 4 – Rehoboth Garden Club Class 5 – Edgewood Garden Club *Certificates of Recognition go to Cumberland, Quononoquott, Western Cranston and Gentian Garden Clubs for their year of newsletters. 29. Judy & H. Nord Kitchen NEWS Advertising Award goes to Plum Beach Garden Club. Publicity Press Book Awards Class 2 – Hameho Garden Club Class 3 – Quononoquott Garden Club Class 4 – Gentian Garden Club Class 5 – Sogkonate Garden Club Class 6 – Barrington Garden Club NGC Smokey the Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest Participants Aidan Sylvia – Sogkonate Garden Club Hannah Reis – Sogkonate Garden Club William Swart – Sogkonate Garden Club Luke Ingalls – Sogkonate Garden Club NGC Poetry Contest NER Winner – Aine McGookin, Edgewood Garden Club Commendations: The RIFGC presents a commendation to past president, Margaret Thielsch, for her generous and most cooperative permission for use of facilities to store our staging equipment for a number of years. We are most grateful for the extended utilization of that facility. The RIFGC presents a commendation to Dianne Giammarco for her fulfillment of a very time consuming research project resulting in the development of a program to be used by our numerous garden club members in the form of a CD on natives vs. invasives. The RIFGC presents a commendation to Vera Bowen for the assistance she has provided for nearly every area of our organization from Treasurer duties to Flower Show to Awards - she is always available and ready to serve the RIFGC. The RIFGC presents a commendation to Judy Hager for her efficient, thorough and competent chairmanship of the 2009 RI Flower Show. The RIFGC presents commendations to Candace Morgenstern and De Feldman, co-chairman of the extremely successful National Garden Club 2008 Fall Board Meeting, "Rhode Island. . . . . Naturally". The RIFGC presents a citation to Maury Ryan for his consistent support of the RI State Flower Show. With the assistance of his handyman, Walter, he has enabled the RIFGC to complete an inventory of staging that has allowed us to expand our schedule to incorporate new and innovative arrangements. Member of Honor Award - RIFGC is proud to Honor Carolyn Montgomery as its Member of Honor for 2009. Nominated by Sogkonate Garden Club, Carolyn’s passion for and commitment to Sogkonate Garden Club and RIFGC demonstrate that she’s an outstanding honoree.
