WVGC SCHOLARSHIPS

1.  West Virginia Garden Club, Inc. Life Membership Scholarship

Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students from WV attending any college may apply for the $2500 scholarship from WVGCI.  The student must be majoring in Horticulture, Botany, Forestry, Biology, Environmental Studies, or related subjects. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 average (3.0 on a 4.0 point scale) For Graduate students, the transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate work is required.  The applicant must be a full-time student, enrolled for a minimum of 12 (twelve) hours of classes at the school through which application is being made.  Post graduate applicants must have a minimum of 9 (nine) hours. It is also required that they are residents of WV but they don’t have to be attending a school in West Virginia. The WV recipient is then eligible for one of 32 scholarships of $3500 awarded by NGC.  DEADLINE TO APPLY:  MARCH 1, 2008.

 

 

2.    Esther J. Hinchman Scholarship 

       Donor: Esther J. Hinchman

A West Virginia High School Senior planning to attend college (in state or out) may apply for this $500 Scholarship. The student must plan to major in some form of Environmental Studies (Horticulture, Landscape Design, Forestry, Botany, Conservation, Land Management, Environmental Concerns, Geology or related  subjects). WVGCI will forward funds, in the winner's name, to the university or college of his/her choice for books or tuition. Awards Committee will use the following criteria to choose the winner:

   Academic Achievement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .30%

   Need . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .30%

   Character . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15%

   Career Commitment . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15%

   Variety of School and Community Involvement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10%

Requirements: must be sponsored by a Garden Club; must supply name, address and phone; date of birth; male/female; name of high school; name of college/university chosen; record of grades; and at least a 250 word document from the student listing her/his goals, purpose for applying and background information that will help Awards Committee with the above criteria (school and community involvement, etc). Deadline: February 1, 2008.                   

                           

 

3.  South Atlantic Regional Scholarship

A $1000 SAR scholarship is available to a college student within the SAR who is enrolled in a college, university, vocational school or community college.  The scholarship will be awarded at the end of the sophomore or junior year. The student must be to majoring in a Plant Science or Environmental related field (not Biology). Applicants must have at least a 3.5 average (3.0 on a 4.0 point scale) For Graduate students, the transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate work is required.  The applicant must be a full-time student, enrolled for a minimum of 12 (twelve) hours of classes at the school through which application is being made.  Post graduate applicants must have a minimum of 9 (nine) hours. It is also required that they are residents of WV but they don’t have to be attending a school in West Virginia. As long as a student maintains a "B" average, he/she may re-apply each year.  Applications will be judged on the following scale:  Academic Record......50%; Need.........30%; Character.......10%;  Commitment to Career.........5%; Variety of Avocation.......5%.  The WVGCI Past Presidents' Council will award $100 to our state applicant.
