WVGC SCHOLARSHIPSClaire Alexander, Scholarship Chairman 1. West Virginia Garden Club, Inc. Life Membership Scholarship Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students from WV attending any college may apply for the $2500 scholarship from WVGCI. The student must be majoring in Horticulture, Botany, Forestry, Biology, Environmental Studies, or related subjects. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 average (3.0 on a 4.0 point scale) For Graduate students, the transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate work is required. The applicant must be a full-time student, enrolled for a minimum of 12 (twelve) hours of classes at the school through which application is being made. Post graduate applicants must have a minimum of 9 (nine) hours. It is also required that they are residents of WV but they don’t have to be attending a school in West Virginia. The WV recipient is then eligible for one of 32 scholarships of $3500 awarded by NGC. DEADLINE TO APPLY: MARCH 1, 2010. 2. Esther J. Hinchman Scholarship Donor: Esther J. Hinchman A West Virginia High School Senior planning to attend college (in state or out) may apply for this $500 Scholarship. The student must plan to major in some form of Environmental Studies (Horticulture, Landscape Design, Forestry, Botany, Conservation, Land Management, Environmental Concerns, Geology or related subjects). WVGCI will forward funds, in the winner's name, to the university or college of his/her choice for books or tuition. Deadline: February 1, 2010. 3. THE CORRIE WHITLOCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP from the South Atlantic Region This scholarship is open to a college sophomore or junior for use during the junior or senior year of college. Each state within the South Atlantic Region may submit one application to be in competition for the Scholarship. A qualifying student is one who is majoring in the study of Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Botany, Plant Pathology, Biology, Forestry, Agronomy, Environmental Concerns, City Planning, Land Management and/or allied subjects. The Scholarship amount is determined by the SAR Board of Directors, and the winner is announced at the SAR Convention. (The Scholarship amount for 2010 is $1,000) Applications may be obtained from the SAR Scholarship Chairman OR from the Garden Club Scholarship Chairman of each state in the region. Complete applications must be sent to the STATE SCHOLARSHIP CHAIRMAN by FEBRUARY 1 and the STATE’S best application must come to the REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIP CHAIRMAN by MARCH 1. Applications will be judged on the following scale: Academic Record…….. ………. 40% Need……………………………40% Character……………………….10% Commitment to Career………… 5% Variety of Avocation…………... 5% As long as the recipient maintains a “B” average, he/she may reapply each year during their college career.
