Entries become the property of NGC.Contest deadline: Club entries must be sent to State Award Chairman by November 15 of current year. State Award: The winner of the contest will receive $50 and a WV Conservation Scholarship and a $500 scholarship from The WV Nursery and Landscape Assn. with the first place going to SAR. The winner and their chaperone will be honored guests of WVGCI at a luncheon meeting of the annual convention. Transportation provided by the sponsor or districts in which the winner resides. Entries will not be returned. Applicants should keep a copy for themselves. National Awards: a $1,000 National Garden Club scholarship will be awarded the national winner. If the winner is an underclassman, the $1,000 scholarship will be held by NGC, Inc., without accrued interest, until such time the student enters college. At that time, the money will be forwarded to the Financial Aid Office of the college that the student will enter. Second place winner will receive a $100 award. Y7. Sponsoring club should supply tape (not VCR) and manuscript. Student should be provided an opportunity to deliver their speech to a live audience for local, and if possible, for state judging. SMOKEY BEAR & WOODSY OWL POSTER CONTEST First thru Fifth grade students are invited to participate in the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest. The entry posters should encourage children to take a personal role in preventing wildfires or conserving natural resources. Winners on the State level will be sent to SAR and their winners receive a $10 cash award; then sent to NGC for judging. The National winner will win a free trip to Washington, D.C. for a presentation ceremony, with round-trip airfare and accommodations for four. A $100 US Savings Bond will be awarded to the first place winner for each grade level as well. National Winners to be announced at the NGC annual meeting. Poster Topic is the basic message for the Smokey Bear poster is “Remember, only you Can Prevent Wildfires” and for Woodsy Owl poster is “Lend a Hand-Care for the Land”. Poster Rules: 1. Poster must feature Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl. 2. Smokey Bear poster should be based upon preventing wildfires and the topic for the current year’s poster set by NGC (see above). 3. Woodsy Owl poster must be based on “lend a hand- save the land.” Please see above in regard to additional topics set by NGC. 4. Each entry should be 11 x 17 inches in size. 5. Materials that can be used: crayons, markers, poster paints, watercolors, etc. 6. Posters must be completed by individual student artists. 7. No three-dimensional posters, computer-scanned, or electronically generated images will be accepted. 8. Please print the artist's name, address, home phone number, grade level, school, teacher's name, city, and state on the back of the poster in the lower right corner. Do not use dark marker for this as it may show through. 9. Posters will be judged 20 percent each for originality, design, slogan, artwork, and overall effectiveness of the message. Y9. CAROLYN G.
